Understand a role before assigning a label

A useful position discussion starts with responsibilities in the team’s actual system: where to help when the team has the ball, where to help when it does not, and what changes in transitions.

A formation or shirt number does not fully describe an individual role. Ask the coach what the label means in that team.

What to do next

• Describe responsibilities in possession, out of possession and transitions.
• Avoid treating one early position as the player’s permanent identity.
